NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R1 is 4-12C (substituted) polyene having 2-4 double bonds and forming a coordinate bond with Co at the diene part of the polyene (the substituent group is 1-4C alkyl, phenyl or cyanomethylene), excluding a polyene composed solely of aromatic ring). EXAMPLE:eta<4>-1,5-Cyclooctadiene-eta<5>-1,3-dimethoxycarbonylcyclopen tadienyl cobalt. USE:Catalyst for the synthesis of pyridine and its derivative. It has strong catalytic activity and high rate of reaction with little production of by-product. PREPARATION:A dimethoxycarbonylcyclopentadienyl alkali metal complex (e.g. the compound of formula II) is made to react with tristriphenylphosphine cobalt monohalogenide, and the reaction product is further reacted with a 4-12C (substituted) polyene having 2-4 double bonds.
