1. A process for the etherification of a phenolic hydroxyl group of a compound having the structural Formula (I) : HO-Ar-(R)n (I) wherein - Ar is an aryl radical comprising a benzene ring, or a plurality of ortho-fused or ortho- and peri-fused benzene rings, - the substituents R, which are identical or different, represent a hydroxyl group, a linear or branched chain alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a linear or branched chain alkenyl radical having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical, a cycloalkyl radical, a phenylalkyl radical in which the aliphatic chain contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl-alkyl radical in which the aliphatic chain contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a halogen atom, a nitro group, an amine group, an aldehyde group or a nitrile group, and - n is a number ranging from 0 to 5, by reaction with an etherification agent selected from the group consisting of alkyl carboxylates, the linear or branched chain alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, alkenyl carboxylates, the linear or branched chain alkenyl radical having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, and compounds capable of forming these carboxylates, and such reaction being characterized in that it is carried out in the presence of catalytically effective amounts of a salt of a carboxylic acid selected among an alkali metal carboxylate, ammonium carboxylate and an alkaline earth metal carboxylate and of a metallic halide selected among an alkali metal iodide, ammonium iodide and an alkaline earth metal iodide. |
