1529315 Cystine and Cysteine AJINIMOTO CO Inc 5 Nov 1975 [6 Nov 1974 3 Dec 1974] 45893/75 Heading C2C L-cystine and/or L-cysteine are made by holding the delta-2-isomer of 2-amino-thiazoline- 4-carboxylic in an aqueous medium at a pH of 5 to 11 in the presence of an enzyme produce by a microorganism, the microorganism being one that is capable of growing in a medium containing 2-amino-thiazoline-4- carboxylic acid as a nitrogen source. The enzyme source may be intact cells of the microorganism, a homogenate of the cells, freeze dried cells or cells of the microorganism which have been subjected to supersonic waves. Prior to use the cells may be first contacted with an organic solvent, a surfactant or a lytic enzyme of microbial cells. The reaction medium may contain hydroxylamine or semicarbazide which prevents decomposition of the L-cystine or L-cysteine. The production of L-cystine is favoured by oxidative reaction conditions whilst the production of L-cysteine is favoured by reducing conditions.
