A circular disc-shaped shuttle (20) rests loosely in a shuttle chamber (7). The needle thread is introduced in a conventional way, by means of a needle (4), through the textile fabric web (1) and through a stitching hole in the needle plate (2) into the needle channel (5). The retracting needle (4) throws up a loop. This is grasped by a gripper (12), driven by means of a shaft (11), and is drawn over the shuttle (20). The needle-thread loop is pulled tight, as hitherto, and grasps the shuttle thread. The new process makes it possible to construct considerably simplified and improved shuttles and embroidering and quilting machines. <IMAGE>
