A method of coating a transparent base plate with an embossed metallic layer, in particular an embossed gold layer, by applying a covercoat to the front side of the base plate in the areas not to be coated with gold, applying the embossed gold layer to the base plate, peeling the embossed gold layer onto the base plate and peeling the cover coat off the base plate is characterised in that the covercoat is applied by screen printing, the embossed gold layer is applied by roller embossing and a colour layer approaching the hue of the embossed gold layer is applied to the rear of the base plate remote from the embossed gold layer. The invention also relates to a base plate produced by this method.
