PURPOSE:To enable setting of the space between the end faces of optical fibers with high accuracy without variance and to enable measurement of the absolute position of the end faces of the optical fibers by detecting the change in bright and dark parts with an image sensor and determining the relative position of the end faces of the optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:Elements 610, 630 at both ends of an image sensor 5 correspond to the positions of end faces 3A, 3B and therefore the relative position and absolute position of the faces 3A, 3B are known by reading and processing the positions from a reference position up to the elements 610, 630 with an arithmetic part. When the end 2A of an optical fiber is inched in an arrow direction in order to decrease the spacing between the end faces 3A and 3B of the optical fibers, a bright part L decreases gradually and the number of the elements in which current flows decreases accordingly. When the number of the elements in which the current flows decreases to 620-630, the number of said elements is processed in the arithmetic part of the sensor 5 and the spacing between the end faces is displayed. The desired spacing between the end faces is obtd. if the movement of the fiber end 2A is stopped at the point of this time. |
