Esters are prepared by reacting (a) a hydroxy compound with a carboxylic acid, ester or anhydride, or (b) an ester of a first alcohol and a first carboxylic acid with an ester of a second alcohol containing fewer carbon atoms than the first alcohol and a second carboxylic acid which is a higher acid than the first carboxylic acid, in the presence of, as catalyst, a titanium amine compound of the general formula wherein n=0, 1, 2 or 3 and R<SP>1</SP> and R are each alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl groups or R<SP>1</SP> may be hydrogen. Examples describe the reaction of phthalic anhydride and 2-ethyl hexanol to give 2-ethyl hexyl phthalate, the reaction of butyl acetate and diethyl adipate to give ethyl acetate and dibutyl adipate. |
