Several automatic vending machines (20) are in each case connected via lines (1-4) to a coding device (32) in which a signal, which indicates a particular disturbance, is coded and provided with an identification allocated to the respective automatic vending machine (20). The message thus formed is transmitted to a switching centre (34) via a telephone network (33). Using the identification, the switching centre (34) delivers the message via the telephone network (35) to the subscriber (36) concerned in each case, where the message is decoded. The message is displayed and/or recorded and shows what fault has occurred in which automatic vending machine. <IMAGE>
