This invention relates to a fail-safe rotating machine wherein pre-determined failure locations are designed into the rotating element to assure minimum energy release upon failure of the element due to the centrifugal forces acting thereon. In a specific illustrated embodiment, a cylindrical flywheel mounted upon a motor shaft is formed of juxtaposed discs having diverse tensile strengths to inhibit simultaneous failure of the discs. Also disclosed are techniques for assuring pre-determined failure locations by fabricating a flywheel of concentric rings having differing thicknesses or by notching the cylindrical surface of a unitary flywheel in a design producing segments of a desired configuration upon failure.
