An optional capability to use a stroboscopic device either as a self-contained device for producing a time sequence of light flashes or as a downstream-connected device in a chain of stroboscopes is achieved by the triggering pulse generating circuit (11) being supplied via a thyristor (19) which either is continuously initiated by coupling its output to its control electrode (24), so that the triggering pulse generating circuit (11) emits triggering pulses to the triggering electrode of the flash lamp (9) corresponding to the flash sequence frequency set, or its control electrode (24) in each case receives control pulses for initiating the thyristor from the triggering pulse generating circuit of the stroboscopic device which is connected upstream in each case. <IMAGE>
