PURPOSE:To surely prevent misfire at the time of change of operating condition of an engine, by controlling an ignitability-ruling factor in such a direction as to improve the ignitability. CONSTITUTION:Intake air flowing through an intake passage 8 is measured by an air flow sensor 9 and then mixed with fuel from a fuel injection valve 10. The quantity of the intake air is regulated by a throttle valve 11. One end 29a of an EGR passage 29 is connected to an exhaust passage extending from an exhaust port 12 to the atmosphere through an exhaust manifold 13, while the other end 29b is connected to the intake passage 8 downstream to the throttle valve 11. An EGR valve 30 is provided as an ignitability control means in the halfway of the EGR passage 29 so that the quantity of exhaust gas to be returned to the intake passage 8 through the EGR passage is regulated by the EGR valve. A control unit 31 regulates the EGR valve 30, and controls solenoids 26, 27 to operate an engine either with all of its cylinders or with a reduced number of them, according to the condition of the engine. |
