A composition comprising pentavalent tantalum, halogen, oxygen and a metal oxide substrate wherein at least one valence of tantalum is bound to an oxygen atom which is bound to the substrate, at least one valence at the tantalum is bound to a halogen atom and the remaining tantalum valences are bound to halogen and/or oxygen atoms; process for the preparation of the composition and a process for the alkylation of an alkylatable hydrocarbon and for the oligomerization of olefins in the presence of the composition. |
