The apparatus is equipped with a microwave heating element (2). The bars of substances are conveyed by means of a conveyor belt (8) and reach the melting pans (1) with the aid of a pushing device (9). These melting pans are provided with openings so that the molten liquid drips into a collecting pan (11). The melting pans are mounted loosely so that a switching device can be activated when the load on the pans is reduced due to melting of the bars. This switching device controls the feeding device (3). The apparatus operates in a particularly efficient and hygienic manner and is virtually maintenance-free. The microwave heating element has a germicidal activity, which is particularly advantageous in the food sector. <IMAGE>
