Apparatus (10) for injecting fluid into a bale (31) of fibrous material comprises a plurality of tubular needles (29) each having an aperture in a lower end thereof, the needles (29) being moveable into and withdrawable from the bale (31) while fluid is simultaneously pumped through the needles (29) and the apertures therein into the bale (31). The fluid may be a liquid nutrient, a preservative or a fire retardant.
