The compounds are hindered phenolic mono- and bicyclic phosphonate compounds having the formula <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> or <IMAGE> wherein R1 is alkyl, R2 is tert-alkyl, R3 and R4 are independently hydrogen or alkyl, R5 is hydrogen, alkyl or phenyl, R6 is alkyl or phenyl, R7 is lower alkyl and R8 is alkyl, phenyl or phenyl substituted with a lower alkyl group.
