<p>The power assisted steering unit has a fixed steering housing (10) containing a rack and pinion. The pinion is connected to an inlet control shaft for servo assist. The latter has a fixed piston (16) connected to the housing by a tube (14) and a movable cylinder (50) resiliently connected to the rack (30) to define first (58) and second (59) pressure chambers. - A distributor valve (40) is controlled by the shaft. The housing is tubular and has opposed end walls (13) enclosing the hollow piston tube. The rack is resiliently mounted on the cylinder which is integral with the housing.
