In a new piston and connecting rod arrangement, the connecting rod (14) is of multiple-element construction and comprises a shank (24) which transmits only compressive forces from the piston (12) to the crank pin (32), and a plurality of tension loops (26) which surround the gudgeon pin (16) and the bearing shell (30) of the crank pin (32) and transmit only tensile forces. At the bottom, the piston (12) has a trough-shaped bearing surface (A) and, opposite the connecting rod (14), a likewise trough-shaped bearing surface (C). During the transmission of compressive forces from the piston to the connecting rod, an essentially rectilinear power flow in the longitudinal direction of the connecting rod is possible via these bearing surfaces (A, C), allowing a lighter-weight construction. <IMAGE>
