A timber beam is formed from timber pieces 19 joined end to end using at least one joint plate 12, which encloses three sides of the joined timber pieces. The joint plate has a bottom piece and two side pieces 16, the side pieces, at least, having a plurality of projections protruding therefrom. The bottom piece has either further projections or holes, through which fasteners are introduced for fastening the bottom piece to the surfaces of the abutting timber pieces 19 lying in the same plane. The butt plate is formed with the bottom piece and the side pieces 16 form a plane with the side pieces 16 running at an angle to the bottom piece. A press plate forces the bottom piece against the surfaces of the abutting timber pieces lying in the same plane, with any projections protruding therefrom embedded in the timber. Rollers or presses act on the side pieces in order to bend them around the timber pieces and embed the projections protruding therefrom into opposite sides of the abutting timber pieces. <IMAGE> |
