A fuel rod for a nuclear reactor involves a capsule pipe (1), of Zircaloy 2 or Zircaloy 4, on whose internal surface a shield layer (2) is arranged which protects the capsule pipe against brittleness, and which consists of zirconium containing 0.18-0.22 percentage by weight of tin, 0.09-0.11 percentage by weight of niobium, 0.09-0.11 percentage by weight of iron and 0.09-0.11 percentage by weight of nickel, or of zirconium containing 0.22-0.28 percentage by weight of tin and 0.22-0.28 percentage by weight of iron; or of zirconium containing 0.45-0.55 percentage by weight of tin and 0.35-0.45 percentage by weight of iron; or of zirconium containing 0.45-0.55 percentage by weight of tin and 0.18-0.22 percentage by weight of iron and 0.18-0.22 percentage by weight of nickel.
