PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of a deviated load burdened on a bearing by adjusting each pressure of the cylinders used for bending, arranged in the direction of roll axis, and making a resultant force of bending forces acting on a roll bearing act always on the central position in the longitudinal direction of the bearing. CONSTITUTION:In a four high mill constructed by arranging respectively plural cylinders 9, 10 used for bending at space intervals in the direction of roll axis, and mounting work rolls 5, 6 relatively movably together with roll chocks 3, 4; a hydraulic circuit to the cylinders 10a-10d which is separately controllable in accordance with a roll shift quantity. When the shifting quantity of roll 6 exceeds the range of 1/2 total width B, a resultant force of bending forces acting on a bearing 11 is controlled in correspondence with the position of bearing 11 so that the resultant force acts always on the central position in the longitudinal direction, that is a position within a range of (1/2)B. In this way, the roll bearing is prevented from being acted by a deviated load due to the movement of the work roll in its axial direction, and the lifetime of the roll is prolonged.
