PURPOSE:To enable to accurately check a shift in printing in a backward direction by a printing head, by varying a backlash checking nominal value in accordance with a backlash compensation value for a printing head. CONSTITUTION:The nominal value is varied, by an amount preset by a nominal value varying part 18, in accordance with the compensation value for the shift in printing due to the backlash in printing in the backward direction which value is set by forward and backward compensation setting part 16. An address range for checking a space by a shielding plate 12, a photo-sensor 13 or the like through a space switch circuit 17 is varied in accordance with the variation of the nominal value. The maximum and the minimum of the address including allowable errors are also varied according to the above variation, so that the error in the address is not varied, and accuracy in checking the space is maintained. |
