摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain the title device of a wide dynamic range by a method wherein a picture element is composed of a plurality of image pickup cells of effectively different photosensitivities instead of varying the photosensitivity of said cell with time. CONSTITUTION:A photo shielding layer 34 of the picture element 10 has the photo receiving surface 40 all opened above a region 14, while it is provided with an optical aperture 38 of the aperture area of e.g. approx. 1/10, as compared with the case of the region 14, above a region 18 at every one. Said layer 34 is provided over the entire surface above the remaining region 18. Therefore, the n<-> type regions 18 function to not only as the vertical transfer line for picture signals but as a photosensitive region in one of the n<-> regions 18 provided with the aperture 38. In other words, the titled device is so constructed that, with respect to one picture element, one n<+> type region 14 and one of the two n<-> type regions 18 function as the photosensitive region to an incident light 32. This region 10 for one picture element is element-isolated from the other adjacent picture element by means of a p<+> type region channel barrier, i.e., channel stopper 36, and thus constructs the image pickup cell array. Such picture elements 10 are arranged in tow dimensions, thus forming the interline transfer type CCD image pickup device.
