In order to avoid the problem arising in the known methods for growing crystals from a growing solution, namely that of crystallising on the container walls in the case of retrograde solubility, there is introduced into the growing solution a radiation absorbable thereby, for example IR radiation or microwave radiation. The method and an apparatus for carrying out the method make it possible to heat the growing solution contained in a vessel or container, in order to reduce the solubility of the crystal material in the solvent and at the same time to keep the vessel walls cooler than the solution contained therein.
