The invention relates to a piston pump or a piston diaphragm pump with at least one piston which is movable in a reciprocating manner by drive devices, a delivery chamber which is variable in volume by the movement of the piston, suction or outlet ducts which are connected to the chamber and lead in each case to valves which are open only in the delivery direction, and markings which are arranged at irregular intervals from one another on a component which is moved on each movement cycle of the piston, these markings successively passing through a pick-off position during the movement of the component and in doing so causing a pick-off device to generate a signal and the spacings of the markings from one another being selected in such a manner that the delivery quantities brought about by the piston on passing between the pick-off positions of two adjacent markings are at least approximately equal.
