PURPOSE:To improve durability by elastically holding each catalytic element in front and rear stages between front and rear set plates and an intermediate set plate, and stably holding each element, in a converter which holds each element in a catalytic casing. CONSTITUTION:A front-part set plate 18 is fitted onto the front edge part in a catalytic casing 8 by a pushing jig and spot-welded 20, and a front-part edge surface cushion ring 16 and a front-stage catalytic element 12 having a peripheral surface cushion body 14 fitted onto the outer periphery are inserted in succession from the right edge side of the casing 8. After the first and the second cushion rings 10 and 11 are inserted, setting an intermediate set plate 9 interposed, a rear-stage catalytic element 13 having a peripheral surface cushion body 15 on the outer periphery is fitted. A rear-part set plate 19 is inserted at last, and a set load is applied, and the set plate 19 is spot-welded onto the catalytic casing 8.
