In the process and apparatus for attenuating/drawing glass fibre, the molten glass is supplied to an orifice plate 28 at essentially atmospheric pressure in order to prevent a flow of molten glass through an orifice at which attenuating/drawing has ceased. The preferred embodiment of the process comprises cooling the lower surface of the orifice plate 28 down to a non-moistening temperature and supplying molten glass to the orifice plate 28 at a pressure which is less than the internal pressure, which is produced in association with surface tension, in each globule or drop which is formed on the lower surface of the orifice plate 28 in association with the cessation of the attenuation/drawing. The preferred embodiment of the apparatus comprises a perforated pressure plate 105 which is immersed in the molten glass body and is placed over the orifice plate 28 in order to bring about a pressure fall when the attenuation/drawing flow is normal in order to reduce the pressure directly above the orifice plate 28 down to what is essentially atmospheric pressure or, in any case, a pressure which is less than the internal pressure in a globule which is formed at an orifice when the attenuation/drawing ceases. <IMAGE>
