The pile of a carpet or of another substrate is treated with a foam fluid which is applied through the opening of a slit doctor to the underside of a tubular carrier through which the fluid is fed. The carrier can rotate about its axis inside a screen-print template so that the outlet of the opening, viewed with respect to the alignment of the substrate, can be moved forwards or backwards. This determines the degree of penetration of the fluid into or through the substrate and/or the amount of fluid which is applied per unit area of substrate. The angular adjustment of the application element can also bring about a stabilisation of the relatively thin screen-print template which is easily deformable. The same effects can also be achieved if the support for the substrate is appropriately moved in relation to the application element. <IMAGE>
