The invention relates to a walking mechanism which is arranged between the floor skids of a shield-type support assembly or the like and has a walking cylinder which is mounted in a guide frame and the piston rod of which is connected via a guide linkage to the walking abutment (face conveyor). At the rear end, the guide frame is attached via an articulated connection to a cross piece which lies in the intermediate space between the two floor skids and is connected here to the floor skids. The length of the cross piece is not greater than the lateral distance between the floor skids. The guide linkage conveniently consists of two parallel elastic guide rods which lie below the guide frame and are guided on it so that a small overall width of the walking mechanism is obtained. The connection head connecting the piston rod of the walking cylinder to the guide linkage is conveniently arranged in such a way that it can be shifted on the guide linkage, as a result of which the distance of the support assembly from the working face can be set.
