Control for a hydraulically driven press having a plurality of power cylinder piston arrangements, which, during the power stroke, act on the press tappet with an increasing operating pressure and which, at the same time, are equipped for the return stroke, and having at least one controllable-delivery pump and a flywheel, which is rigidly attached to the pump shaft and which stores all or at least most of the energy required for a working cycle of the press. An additional controllable-delivery pump is provided, which is driven by an electric motor without a flywheel. This additional pump, prior to the working cycle of the press, and for the purpose of starting or charging the flywheel, can be connected on its discharge side to the suction side of the first mentioned pump, which as a result acts as a motor, effectively driving the otherwise driveless flywheel. <IMAGE>
