A first set of transducers is arranged in an array to transmit an ultrasonic beam into human tissue and receive a reflected echo. A second set of transducers also transmits and receives ultrasonic pulses from human tissue and is arranged to transmit in a direction which is perpendicular to that of the first array, while forming an acute angle w.r.t. the first array along the direction of the beam transmitted by the latter. A first circuit processes the echo received by the first transducer array to produce a signal representative of tomogram information of the tissue.
