PURPOSE:To obtain an easy-to-use image file by inputting the direction and size of image information in an index during the registration of an image, and controlling output information on the basis of the information and matching the result with an output format. CONSTITUTION:A control part 1 which controls the whole image file device connects with an index memory 4, read part 5, small-storage data memory 6 wherein image information is recorded, printer part 7, display part 8, and keyboard 9 respectively through a data bus 2 and a control bus 3. When the image information is registered, the size and direction of an original are inputted on the keyboard part 9 and the read part 5 scans on the original. Then, scanned image information is displayed. Simultaneously, it is displayed and recorded in a system operation area at the same time. Index information is inputted on the keyboard part for retrieval, and then the index of an image is retrieved and displayed.
