Elementary operations in microprogramed control systems are initiated by EO control signals which are determined by the operation code of the micro instructions of a microprogram. When microprograms are executed, it is found that subroutines can often be used because individual steps are repeated exactly a number of times. In cases where, in comparable sections, most of the EO control signals are repeated, but a few EO control signals are different, in order to generate individual EO control signals, transmission of EO control signals read from the microprogram memory but which are not valid are suppressed during such sections replaced by a subroutine. The particular EO control signals that are different are identified by the last microprogram address before the start of the subroutine. <IMAGE>
