A line protection circuit breaker of narrow construction, which has a latching mechanism which can be switched on by hand and can be tripped in each case manually, by means of an impact armature or bimetallic device, as well as freely, contains an additional signalling indicator (10) which responds only in the event of a short circuit and in this case blocks the latching mechanism (4) via the free tripping device (5), and hence prevents switching on to a short circuit which may still be present. The tripping of the signalling indicator (10), which is independent of, and physically isolated from, the latching mechanism (4) and its switching lever (6), takes place by means of the impact armature (7) of the magnetic coil (2). Since the signalling indicator (10) consists of only two parts, namely the actual plate-shaped signalling indicator (10) and a helical spring (13), its volume is very small and its installation is extremely simple. In the event of an overload disconnection of the line protection circuit breaker, the signalling indicator (10) does not respond. It is thus possible to see immediately whether the disconnection has been caused by an overload or by a short circuit. In the latter case, it is not possible to switch the line protection circuit breaker on again until the signalling indicator (10) has been moved back to its original position. As a rule, the cause of the short circuit has previously been determined and rectified (cf. Fig.). <IMAGE>
