In artificial respiration apparatus a chamber which communicates with a face mask is connected to a circulating air pump by means of which the effective pressure in the respiratory circuit can be adjusted to a desired subatmospheric pressure. An electrically driven circulating pump 5, receiving air through return pipe 11, drives air through pipe 6 to a two-way cock 9, so that air may be supplied either through pipe 7 to a venturi arrangement 10, so as to reduce the pressure in a chamber 2, or through pipe 8, in which case the air passes directly through the chamber to pipe 11 without change in the pressure in the chamber 2. The face mask 1 is connected through a carbondioxide absorber 4 and the chamber 2 to a breathing bag 13. The bag fills initially with air drawn in through the mask 1 by the venturi arrangement and, thereafter, artificial respiration is carried out by alternately squeezing and releasing the bag. The mean pressure at which this is performed is determined by the setting of the valve 9 to give a greater or less extraction effect in the chamber 2. Anaesthetic or other apparatus 14 may be connected through a twoway cock 15 and an exhaust valve 16 and extra-air inlet 17 may be provided. |
