In order to improve a belt grinding unit for grinding or edge-banding machines working in the through-feed mode for machining workpieces, having an endless grinding belt which is driven by a motor, a grinding shoe with which the grinding belt is pressed against the workpiece by means of a cylinder arrangement, and three devices independently actuated devices with which the grinding belt and the grinding shoe can be advanced and returned in the horizontal and vertical directions and be rotated about an axis parallel to the through-feed direction, so that the setup time is reduced, with the smallest degree of technical complexity possible, an automatic grinding shoe exchange device (13) is provided for changing the grinding shoe (17) and automatic adjustment members are provided for advancing and returning operations in the horizontal and vertical directions and for rotating operations about the axis (8) parallel to the through-feed direction. <IMAGE>
