NEW MATERIAL:The 2-cyano-4-alkylphenol ester derivative of formula I (the ring X is group of formula II or formula III; R and R' are 1-10C alkyl). EXAMPLE:trans-4-(trans-4-Methoxymethylcyclohexyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid alpha-cyano-4-butylphenyl ester. USE:A liquid crystal composition having negative dielectric anisotropy and usable as a guest-host display element can be obtained by mixing the compound with other nematic liquid crystal. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by converting the corresponding carboxylic acid of formula IV with SOCl2 to the acid chloride of formula V, and reacting the chloride with 2-cyano-4-alkylphenol in the presence of pyridine.
