The system for converting a car to four wheel drive comprises an hydraulic motor (4) for each wheel which does not already receive any power. Power is conveyed from the motor (4) to the corresponding wheel via a mechanical transmission link (12) which can be releasably secured to an adaptor on the wheel. The adaptor is held in place by the existing wheel nuts. A pump driven by the car engine provides a supply of pressurised hydraulic fluid which is directed to the motors (4) through a hydraulic circuit. The circuit incorporates an hydraulic distributor which allows the motors to be driven either forwards or backwards.
