PURPOSE:In a car engine, to measure actual air/fuel ratio while to perform exhaust gas purification by using the upstream side of a conduit made of oxygen ion conductor as an oxygen pump while the downstream side as decision section. CONSTITUTION:Exhaust gas will flow through an inlet duct 14 and a plurality of conduits 10 impermeable of oxygen gas while conductive of oxygen ion, to read- out voltage across a common electrode 11 and decision electrode 13 without applying voltage across the common electrode 11 and oxygen pump 12, and if it is low it is decided to be lean to employ the cathode side as the common electrode 11 while if it is high it is decided to be rich to employ the anode side as the common electrode 11. Through function of the oxygen pump electrode 12, oxygen is supplied/discharged to provide exhaust gas composition in the vicinity of theoretical air/fuel ratio to measure actual air/fuel ratio reliably without influence of temperature, residual N2 gas, etc. Due to supply/discharge of oxygen in the vicinity of theoretical air/fuel ratio, Ni catalyst in the conduit 10 and Perovskite complex oxide catalyst 17, maximum exhaust gas purification is achieved under ideal condition. |
