The invention relates to a cyanide- and cyanate-free agent for salt bath carbonitriding in the temperature range from 750 to 850 DEG C to produce carbonitride coatings of known structure on steel materials. Labour time and energy costs and material costs are saved during the preparation of this agent according to the invention. As a result of the environmentally-friendly composition, the conditions for storage, transport and operating the salt bath are significantly improved. The object of the invention is to find the composition of a cyanide-and cyanate-free agent which acts as carbonitriding salt and at the same time can be used for regeneration. This is ensured by a salt mixture composed of 40-50% of dicyandiamide 20-30% of urea 5-15% of alkali metal carbonate 10-20% of alkali metal chloride and 2-10% of flake graphite as carbonising support. i
