A circuit for calculating the result of an operation on two binary or binary coded input quantities comprises two switching networks, the first of which produces auxiliary quantities which are fed to the second switching network, the second network only being subject to control signals to select one of a plurality of switching functions which the second network can provide. The arrangement described is for adding two binary or binary coded decimal numbers, the second switching network being controlled according as the logic required is for binary or binary coded decimal operation. As shown, Fig. 1, two input registers Rx 1 -Rx 4 , Ry 1 -Ry 4 contain two binary numbers or binary coded decimal digits to be added, outputs from the register stages being connected to a first switching network consisting of two parts 1, 2, whose outputs consisting of auxiliary functions g 1 . . . g 6 , h 1 . . . h 6 are applied to intermediate registers Rg 1 -Rg 6 , Rh 1 -Rh 6 , the outputs of which are applied to a second switching netword 3, Fig. 2, to which are also applied signals on control lines b,b dependent on the binary or coded decimal nature of the inputs, together with a carry signal on lines r, r. Two multi-digit numbers may be added by applying the digits of the numbers serially to the registers Rx 1 -Rx 4 , Ry 1 -Ry 4 . The derivation of suitable logic for the switching networks 1, 2, 3 is described in detail in the Specification with reference to function tables (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) and an alternative set of auxiliary functions is described with reference to further function table (Fig. 5, not shown). |
