The invention relates to a method and a device for sensing the filling level in the ink fountain of the inking unit of a printer, preferably an offset printer. The method is characterised in that the ink in the ink fountain is continuously stirred and the resistance encountered in the ink fountain during this process is measured and used as a measure of the filling level. The device is characterised according to the invention by a stirring unit for the ink located in the ink fountain, which unit has at least one stirring element which can be moved backwards and forwards in the ink fountain, and by a measuring element which determines the deflection of the stirring element when stirring the ink.
