A click generator for a brainstem audiometer comprises a device (1) for recognition of a starting pulse (a), a downstream driver (2) for transformation of the starting pulse into an overall pulse for a downstream amplifier (4), an attenuator (5') downstream from the amplifier (4) and an electro-acoustical transducer (7) for transformation of the attenuated overall pulse into an acoustical stimulation signal (3) in the form of a click. In order to obtain a favourable signal-to-noise ratio, the attenuator (5') has attenuation stages for coarse gradation, and the driver (2) for fine gradation has a switching part (15) which forms the overall pulse from a sequence of pulse duration-modulable part-pulses. <IMAGE>
