PURPOSE:To prepare a whisker preform forming a uniform composite material free of local density deviation, by dispersing produced whiskers in a solution containing a resin, sieving and filtering the dispersion, and pressing and drying the remaining wet whisker cake. CONSTITUTION:Whiskers of SiC, Si3N4 or graphite having a diameter of about 0.1-5mu and length of about 10-500mu are loosened and dispersed in a dilute solution of a resin. The resin is, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, etc., and the concentration is about 0.1-10%. The dispersion is passed through a sieve of about 32-100mesh to separate the insufficiently dispersed agglomerate and filtered to separate the major part of the resin-containing solution as the filtrate. The remaining whisker cake is dried optionally after being pressed to a desired density. A homogeneous whisker preform having bidirectionally and uniformly oriented structure can be obtained by this process. |
