The closure device possesses a blade-shaped guide (18), with the aid of which the passing, folded envelopes are partially opened, the envelope flap passing below the guide and the actual envelope above the guide. A moistener (22) moistens the folded-open flap and a closure device (23, 24) folds the envelope back together and exerts a contact pressure for bonding. Two light barriers (16, 21) detect the passing envelopes and the folded-away envelope flaps respectively. A gate circuit (40) emits a signal to control a distribution guide (27) whenever the detector (16) responds but the detector (21) does not. A monoflop (38) emits a delay signal by means of which the shape of the envelope flaps is taken into account in the gate circuit (40). <IMAGE>
