The invention relates to a welding machine (10) for connecting two metal parts (14, 15) along a welding groove (27) formed by these metal parts, the welding groove (27) running essentially two-dimensionally and being filled with a plurality of welding layers. The welding machine has a welding torch (23) which can be controlled by a specified main program of a numerical control (33) and by a guiding machine (12, 13) in the x-y direction and furthermore by a sensor (22) detecting the deviations of the welding-groove course (28) from the specified program and a correcting device (18) in the xd and yd direction and thus in correspondence with the actual welding-groove course. In order to provide a welding machine for multiple layer welding, in the most simple manner and cost-effectively, with which welding machine in particular a more rapid and accurate positioning of the welding torch is possible with the correcting devices/sensors at the same time having an increased service life, the correcting device (18) is connected to a bulk storage device (38) for storing the xd-yd correcting coordinates during the welding of the first welding layer, the bulk storage device (38) being connected to a correcting member (36) in the numerical control (33) in such a manner that, when welding a further welding layer, the stored xd-yd values are recalled and transferred into the main program and hence guiding machine (12, 13) and welding torch (23)... solely by the numerical control (33) ...
