An axial flow rotary separator comprises a rotor 120 acting inside a housing having a foraminous portion, the rotor comprising a plurality of crop-engaging elements 124 which both rotate and reciprocate axially and which are arranged to engage a crop mat on the inside of the housing more effectively as they move axially in the feed direction than as they move axially in the opposite return direction whereby the net effect of the axial reciprocation of the crop-engaging elements is to advance the mat in the feed direction. The crop-engaging elements in the form of fingers 124 are fixed to rings 170 which rotate about an axis 162 parallel to but eccentric with respect to the drum or rotor axis.
