In a headrest for a motor vehicle seat which is vertically displaceable by means of two carrier arms which have an operative connection to a headrest base body and are held in guide sheaths fixed to the backrest, and which is provided with a handwheel of a gearing which is supported on the headrest base body, adjustment of the headrest being achieved by means of the gearing, there is provision, for the purpose of using the gearing for vertical adjustment, for the adjustment movement to be transferred to a profile section of a flexible, rod-shaped bar. The latter is guided by a carrying arm constructed as a tube and detachably connected at the lower end to the backrest and, during an adjustment movement runs with its upper end in a tubular section laid inside the headrest.
