New cephem compounds of the formula :

wherein
R<1> is amino or acylamino; and
R<9> is a group of the formula:
<CHEM>
or a group of the formula :
-A-N<(+)> (R<1><0>)3
wherein the symbols define certain groups, pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof and pharmaceutical compositions comprising an effective amount of such compounds in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable, substantially non-toxic carrier or excipient. The invention also relates to such compounds wherein the carboxy group is protected and to processes for preparing them.
