The invention relates to an auxiliary device to be used when milking cows in stalls. Milkers generally have to milk a relatively large number of cows which, so far as the milker is concerned, means that he frequently has to change position, the frequent lowering into a squatting position for milking purposes being relatively strenuous. In order to facilitate the work done by the milker during milking, it is proposed according to the invention that an auxiliary device be provided which has a seating element that can be suspended from the stall ceiling by means of a suspension member to hang freely in a manner which is longitudinally displaceable and adjustable in length. By means of this auxiliary device, to be arranged behind cows, the milker can move along behind the cows without having to stand up from the auxiliary device every time he changes position.
