The invention relates to a process for the separate removal of slag and iron from the slag bath of a coal gasification reactor for gasifying iron-containing fuels in which the slag is removed continuously, and the molten iron discontinuously, from the reactor into separate receiving containers which are integrated in the pressure system of the reactor, and the temperature of the moulds in the region of the passage openings is regulated by the introduction of a coolant and by operation of a burner. In an apparatus for carrying out such a process, the invention provides that moulds (4,5) are arranged in the bottom of the gasification reactor (1), the moulds having an annular space (11,12) which surrounds a passage opening (6,7) and is acted on by an adjustable stream of coolant, that the moulds are provided with a burner (17,18) which is directed against the passage opening, and that the mould provided for the removal of the slag bears a funnel-shaped extension (10), the entrance to which lies within the region of the reactor (1) in which the slag accumulates.
